[00:00:00] Hey, I'm Luis! And I'm Luis! And you're listening to the Content Is Profit Podcast.
[00:00:11] Hey guys, and welcome back to Content Is Profit. Today, I have a special episode where we answer a ton of questions about podcast growth and actually monetization of your platform.
[00:00:21] Keep in mind, this also applies for majority of content frameworks or content styles.
[00:00:29] And we go through multiple resources in the episode on how we get some of the information, incredible podcasters, incredible resources for monetization and sponsorship and podcast guesting.
[00:00:40] So before we actually dive into the episode, please go ahead and go to bizrus.co forward slash monetize to get your free resources.
[00:00:47] Those are the frameworks that we use to cross our first six figures when we first started this business.
[00:00:52] And it's helped so, so many people, including us, which we continue to revisit those.
[00:00:57] And you'll see those in action today, which is very exciting.
[00:01:00] So like I mentioned, very special episode. Shout out to Naomi.
[00:01:04] She reached out on social media after one of our call to actions here in the episode.
[00:01:09] And she's like, guys, I have a question. I have this podcast that I'm very, very passionate about.
[00:01:15] And I've experienced some friction. I want to monetize it.
[00:01:19] I want to go ahead and learn how to continue to grow, not just the podcast, but her community.
[00:01:24] So we dive deep into some of those questions.
[00:01:27] So it was a 20 minute call. We extended it a little bit more because, you know, we got in the flow.
[00:01:33] So you'll hear about, you know, 35 to 40 minutes of live call right here in the studio, helping her understand a little bit of the frameworks and what makes a podcast successful.
[00:01:45] So like I said, we share a ton of resources and hopefully this will help you as well.
[00:01:50] All right. Here's the episode.
[00:01:52] I'm kind of hearing you because I listen to the content is profit podcast like all the time and it's just like, like a surreal thing to see you. Yeah.
[00:02:02] Well, that's awesome. I feel very honored. And thank you for the kind words.
[00:02:06] All right. So, of course, do we sound the same? That's the question I ask all the time.
[00:02:10] Actually, you do. I mean, I can immediately like as soon as you start started speaking.
[00:02:15] I was like, yeah, that's that's Louise.
[00:02:18] Success. Yeah.
[00:02:19] By the way, I'm going to add it here. We have a board says best bro.
[00:02:22] So I'm going to add one tally to my name, not Fonzie's name.
[00:02:27] No worries.
[00:02:30] Sweet. So how can how can I help you?
[00:02:32] Just to keep it short, I guess I just wanted to know probably the best ways to grow and monetize my podcast because I launched it on August 20th this year.
[00:02:43] So it's only about months old. It's still a bit of a baby.
[00:02:46] But I have been seeing like obviously with the podcast, it's it's slow to grow like many things.
[00:02:53] But with the podcast, uniquely, it can be very slow to grow.
[00:02:55] I know that and consistency is a big thing. And I'm not you know, consistency isn't really a big issue for me.
[00:03:00] OK, I know that I can be consistent with it because it's something I definitely want to do.
[00:03:04] But for me, I just wanted to know different strategies to get that growth and get that get to that monetization stage, especially when I have, you know, a certain level of limited capacity.
[00:03:17] And that is just me. I work part time and I don't necessarily have like a studio or like really high tech equipment or anything like that.
[00:03:25] I don't really have a team. So as yet, hopefully I can get one in the future.
[00:03:29] But, you know, that's basically where I'm at. And then recently, the last thing is just that I have seen.
[00:03:36] Obviously, I mean, I might be being a bit paranoid, but in the last two episodes, at least I've seen kind of a big drop in downloads, even though my downloads right now are small because I'm just starting out.
[00:03:46] I did see a drop in downloads. I was just trying to figure out, you know, what I can do to fix that.
[00:03:52] And then also just once again, get to that growth and monetization.
[00:03:57] Awesome. All good questions.
[00:04:00] All right. I'm going to go through.
[00:04:03] It's like six stages that we go through a little bit, almost like a little audit.
[00:04:06] So I'll ask you some very specific questions.
[00:04:08] I'll get those answers and then that will give me a little bit of a better picture on like your capacity.
[00:04:14] Are you familiar with like the topics that we talk on, like the publishing pyramid and the content?
[00:04:21] Yeah.
[00:04:22] You do. OK, cool.
[00:04:23] I think you downloaded the resources, right?
[00:04:25] I did download them.
[00:04:26] And I also listened to the last podcast on minimal viable.
[00:04:29] Yeah.
[00:04:30] Awesome. So minimal viable content is something that I've been doing.
[00:04:31] Something that we talk about all the time.
[00:04:33] I think you like you're there in a way, like consistency is not an issue.
[00:04:37] I will look at publishing pyramid and then we haven't released this one like a lot, but a book is coming on.
[00:04:43] This is like the six stages.
[00:04:45] So that's where you can like imagine the publishing pyramid under each one of these and then you can get and do that.
[00:04:51] So the first one is obviously, you know, the what to say.
[00:04:54] So what's your like your topics, right?
[00:04:55] Like you talk about something very specific, which is.
[00:04:59] Yeah.
[00:05:00] So so I mainly talk about I don't have a specific niche really, but I have a target audience and then it's mainly about just creating content that's relatable for 20 somethings.
[00:05:11] That's the main target audience, people in their 20s.
[00:05:14] But then it's also about not just creating relatable, casual content, but stuff about personal growth, stuff that's also plaguing 20 year olds, 20 year olds lives, like maybe climate change or social justice, just things they can be informed on.
[00:05:26] But also in a very casual, conversational and relatable way.
[00:05:30] So then sometimes we talk about, you know, not serious topics like climate change or social justice, and we talk about things like confidence or, you know, personal growth in general.
[00:05:40] And then other times we talk about those more serious topics.
[00:05:43] OK, cool.
[00:05:44] So is it is it just you or do you have a co-host?
[00:05:47] No, it's just me.
[00:05:49] But every now and then I do have a few guests.
[00:05:52] Oh, OK, cool.
[00:05:54] So there's when we talk to monetization, there's like three main markets.
[00:05:58] Right. You see the relationships, health and finances.
[00:06:04] Right.
[00:06:04] So all those three are like core needs of the human need, the human being needs.
[00:06:09] So I would highly recommend, OK, focus on like one of those in a way.
[00:06:13] Sometimes like we're very passionate about the topics and we're like, OK, we can go about this.
[00:06:17] When we started the podcast, similar thing, we're like, oh, everybody can make money with content.
[00:06:23] And we're like at the time we had an agency where it's like, let's I don't want to do like the funnel agency.
[00:06:30] I don't want to do the content agency.
[00:06:31] I don't want to do the thing agency.
[00:06:33] So the the niche or like the topic itself can also be part of like that thing.
[00:06:39] So that's why we named content is profit.
[00:06:41] Content is profit.
[00:06:42] We got OK.
[00:06:43] People entrepreneurs want to make money.
[00:06:45] So that's one of the core needs.
[00:06:47] But if you improve, you solve a problem.
[00:06:50] That's the main thing that your content is to do is like they need you need to solve a problem either on relationships.
[00:06:54] So, you know, you help people how to create better relationships with people around the world.
[00:07:00] So that will be like one vertical.
[00:07:02] You don't have to do all three.
[00:07:04] Like I would recommend start with maybe one of the columns. Right.
[00:07:07] The second one is like health.
[00:07:09] So it could be your how do we frame your message to, you know, on personal growth, social justice, like your own health, mental health, for example.
[00:07:20] Or it could be like your health as a human being and making sure that you are a better human being.
[00:07:24] So I'm helping you get be a better person with that comes a lot of like all the things as in like the person needs to acknowledge that they can be better.
[00:07:32] So at some point, you know, you'll be attracting those.
[00:07:34] So you have to like play with that message a little bit.
[00:07:36] But then the other one is like, OK, I'm helping people how to make more money, which tends to attract more people.
[00:07:42] At the end of the day, you can decide of like which one of these.
[00:07:45] But a lot of people are searching for better relationships. Right.
[00:07:48] A lot of people are looking to get healthier. Right.
[00:07:52] As a person.
[00:07:53] So I think your show maybe lives in those two.
[00:07:56] And that will help you once you see it that way, you'll be like, OK, where are people?
[00:08:02] People looking for information to get in better health and become better people.
[00:08:09] And then you can start finding these communities online or you can start finding these physical places where you can go and interact and be like, hey, nice to meet you.
[00:08:18] You know, I'm Naomi. This is my show. I would love for you to be part of it. Right.
[00:08:22] In our specific case, we had Facebook groups when we launched the show.
[00:08:27] So we went to a thousand Facebook groups and we were like, here's who we are.
[00:08:30] And we promoted the show there.
[00:08:31] And that started getting like the core listeners.
[00:08:34] And for us was like entrepreneurs that wanted to make money with content. Right.
[00:08:38] So so initially, that's how it is on the topic.
[00:08:41] That's going to help you out.
[00:08:42] Now, the second lever. Right.
[00:08:45] It will be like the creation, which it's like, how do you create the show?
[00:08:49] How often do you create the show? Do you like when do you record?
[00:08:53] Like walk me through the process a little bit.
[00:08:54] It doesn't have to be in detail.
[00:08:55] Like you once a week, you know, once a month.
[00:08:58] So I so I release episodes every Tuesday.
[00:09:01] So it's once every week.
[00:09:03] I try to have maybe about two episodes in the rotation.
[00:09:07] So I wouldn't be like recording today and then, you know, having the episode being released that week.
[00:09:13] If that's the case, then I'm falling behind.
[00:09:15] So, yeah, I usually have some things in the in the backlog before.
[00:09:19] But it's it's once every week.
[00:09:22] Once every week.
[00:09:23] So to two, two episodes a month.
[00:09:25] How long are they?
[00:09:27] They are.
[00:09:29] I tried to keep them average 30 minutes.
[00:09:32] Recently, the guest episodes have been maximum one hour.
[00:09:36] I'm trying to bring that down to like maximum maybe 40 minutes, but that I'm trying to like have an average of maybe 30, 40 minutes if it's a solo episode and it's just me maximum like 25.
[00:09:48] OK.
[00:09:49] Yeah, perfect.
[00:09:50] Are you familiar with a call a show called Nudge by Phil?
[00:09:54] He's part of the network, too.
[00:09:56] No, I'm not actually here.
[00:09:58] Let me find you the link.
[00:10:00] He also releases twice a month.
[00:10:04] And I love how he does it.
[00:10:07] I think it's super cool.
[00:10:08] And he's also in the UK.
[00:10:11] So here, I'll give you the in the chat.
[00:10:16] You'll see the link.
[00:10:18] I would have that as a case study show for like twice a month because our conversation and I'll send you later the our show with him.
[00:10:28] OK, we talked about this.
[00:10:29] We're like, OK, we're like a three times a week, two times a week show.
[00:10:33] High frequency.
[00:10:34] He's very low frequency.
[00:10:36] And he's doing really well.
[00:10:38] So I'm like, tell me more.
[00:10:40] How are you doing it?
[00:10:42] Yeah.
[00:10:44] Yeah.
[00:10:45] I think I'm in the middle.
[00:10:46] Oh, yeah. Sorry.
[00:10:46] I think it's so it's for me is four times a month because it would be once every week.
[00:10:51] So, OK, so, OK, once once a week.
[00:10:55] Yeah.
[00:10:56] So still minimum frequency.
[00:10:58] Definitely not like high frequency.
[00:10:59] I mean, that is.
[00:11:00] Yeah. And it's fine.
[00:11:01] I mean, Phil is like twice a month and he does really well.
[00:11:04] So like, you know what he thought he really focused on, like the production of it.
[00:11:10] So he has like a little bit more time and he's like, I see it as an art form, like as a craft.
[00:11:14] So for him, when you listen to the episodes, you'll be able to see how he does it.
[00:11:19] And he's like he introduces a topic and then he has his own opinion on this thing.
[00:11:23] So maybe he interviewed five people or four people for like that one episode or maybe two people or maybe one person.
[00:11:31] Right.
[00:11:31] And then he talks about the topic and then he brings like almost like audio clips of that person giving his opinion on that.
[00:11:38] And so it's like his show, but but with the collaboration of experts, I think it's cool, which if you're familiar with like editing and we'll talk about production in just a second.
[00:11:48] But like this script, you can do that like very simple and it's nothing too crazy if you have the structure ahead of time.
[00:11:52] So, OK, perfect. So you do once a week.
[00:11:55] All right, cool.
[00:11:55] So that's important.
[00:11:56] Obviously, you know, I don't think you have an issue with the creation process.
[00:11:59] Most people do starting, but you seem like a very responsible human being.
[00:12:03] I'd be like, I'm very committed to this.
[00:12:06] You know, were you a good student?
[00:12:09] Like, were you always on time with your assignments and things?
[00:12:11] Yeah, I was a bit of an overachiever.
[00:12:13] Yeah.
[00:12:13] Awesome. Awesome.
[00:12:15] You should say that proud.
[00:12:17] So most entrepreneurs would deal with they're not.
[00:12:20] So they're like, that's why I do my own thing.
[00:12:22] And, you know, they struggle with this part.
[00:12:24] So you're good.
[00:12:25] All right.
[00:12:26] On production side, you say that you're producing it yourself right now.
[00:12:30] Like, walk me through like how long would it take you to like edit one episode, for example?
[00:12:36] Depends.
[00:12:37] So if it's a solo episode and it's just myself, I could take maybe an hour to edit an episode.
[00:12:42] If that's the only thing I was doing in that hour, if it's a guest episode, because I because the guest episodes are filmed and I post the guest episodes as videos on YouTube.
[00:12:51] It does take a lot longer because I do like different clips and stuff.
[00:12:55] And then I have to obviously like, I don't know, it's different editing, just audio than it is editing like video and that kind of thing sometimes.
[00:13:02] So when it comes to editing a video, sometimes it can take a full day.
[00:13:08] Yeah.
[00:13:09] So share with me.
[00:13:10] What's it?
[00:13:11] How do I find you on YouTube?
[00:13:12] Oh, sorry.
[00:13:13] Yeah, it's notes and quotes podcast.
[00:13:16] So just notes and quotes.
[00:13:21] Yeah.
[00:13:25] Okay, I see you here.
[00:13:26] Cool.
[00:13:31] I'll take a look at it.
[00:13:32] But yeah, it by the way, it looks great.
[00:13:36] And you have.
[00:13:37] Thank you.
[00:13:38] You have awesome.
[00:13:39] Yeah.
[00:13:40] No, I appreciate that.
[00:13:41] Thanks.
[00:13:45] Where are you editing?
[00:13:46] Like what software?
[00:13:48] Riverside mainly, but then I also.
[00:13:50] Yeah, yeah.
[00:13:51] Mainly on that.
[00:13:52] I film guest episodes on Riverside and then I edit the guest episodes on Riverside.
[00:13:57] But if I'm just doing an episode by myself, sometimes I find like GarageBand does what I need it to do because it's just the audio.
[00:14:04] Okay.
[00:14:05] Are you familiar with with this script?
[00:14:09] I've heard of this script.
[00:14:10] I just haven't looked into it, to be honest.
[00:14:13] We've used all of it.
[00:14:14] My brother is like really good on Adobe products.
[00:14:17] The team is really good on Adobe products.
[00:14:20] I'm like a tinkerer.
[00:14:21] I'm not editor.
[00:14:22] And I found in this script the best thing because you know how in Riverside you have your text thing and then you have that little timeline.
[00:14:29] Okay.
[00:14:29] Yeah.
[00:14:32] So this script has a text thing.
[00:14:34] So you have to like, you can download your Riverside files almost like, you know, the synced ones and then bring them together to the rest.
[00:14:42] So you get like this composition and you can create like pre templates where you can just like slide and you have like this like scenes and it's super simple to use and it's very quick.
[00:14:52] So you'll probably reduce your editing time quite a bit.
[00:14:56] So I will highly recommend look at a demo, you know, full disclosure where affiliates obviously I you don't have to use our link.
[00:15:06] I don't care, but watch like a YouTube video of like how to edit on this script and you'll be like, that's the one.
[00:15:12] So I highly recommend it.
[00:15:13] You're going to save a ton of time, especially if you have a guest.
[00:15:16] And then if you have I people keep telling us to do like a this script like course, we don't have it.
[00:15:22] So at some point we'll do it.
[00:15:23] But if you want, I'm happy to do like a workshop for a charge.
[00:15:27] We like we hop on.
[00:15:28] We like, hey, here's how to do it because this is one of the things that we're exploring doing so happy to help you there.
[00:15:33] I appreciate that will save you a ton of production time.
[00:15:36] And then obviously that time and resources, you can focus a little bit more on like the monetization side, because like at this point, there's going to be some outreach that you might need to do or developing.
[00:15:45] We'll get to that in just a second.
[00:15:47] But that gives me an idea of it.
[00:15:50] I'm also a big fan of like very raw content.
[00:15:52] So you're familiar with like we make mistakes, we leave the mistakes, we do the thing, we do the thing.
[00:15:57] So that will take you also a lot of time off the editing.
[00:16:00] But if you're grabbing like, if your guest says something and you're grabbing a clip from it, are you grabbing clips from the guests?
[00:16:06] Are you grabbing clips to support the visuals of what they're saying?
[00:16:12] Um, no, I'm grabbing just clips from the guests.
[00:16:15] So like at first, just for Instagram or TikTok or something, I would just do a clip a few minute or two minute clip from the episode.
[00:16:22] Yeah, it will be.
[00:16:24] Do you feel like they're pre planned to where like, hey, we have these three clips and we're going to talk about these three clips with the guest or they know.
[00:16:32] And then you grab those clips.
[00:16:34] Yeah.
[00:16:34] So I would just film the episode.
[00:16:36] And then when I'm editing afterwards, I'd be like, oh, what do you what I think could work as a clip?
[00:16:40] So it's not pre planned really.
[00:16:42] I see.
[00:16:43] Yeah.
[00:16:44] No, that's fine.
[00:16:45] Um, yeah, I will start looking at places in your production where you can save a ton of time because it will burn you out, especially if you don't have a team.
[00:16:54] So I'll be like, okay, how can I make this a little bit more effective?
[00:16:58] So I'm like, okay, in our solo episodes, for example, and we're not the best at this, by the way, but we've done it a couple of times.
[00:17:04] Now we have help of a producer.
[00:17:06] So great.
[00:17:07] But we'll be like, okay, what are the five news that we want to talk about?
[00:17:10] Like, for example, what are the five?
[00:17:12] I think we released like Alex or Mozzie episode not so long ago.
[00:17:15] Yeah.
[00:17:16] Fonzie came in with like three clips and that's what we reacted to.
[00:17:21] And he made it super simple.
[00:17:22] So we already know what we're talking about.
[00:17:24] I know with a guest, it's a little bit harder to plan.
[00:17:27] But if you have like a 10 minute conversation with them ahead of time, you're like, oh man, I've seen this content.
[00:17:32] I really want to explore like this topic, this topic, this topic.
[00:17:35] And it almost creates a container.
[00:17:37] And then you have that idea whenever you're going to edit it.
[00:17:39] Whereas like, I know where things go.
[00:17:42] Cause I've been on both sides.
[00:17:43] Like where it's like, oh, I love the fruit flowing conversation.
[00:17:46] But my commitment is like, I'm not going to do any supporting material because it's going to take me a ton of time.
[00:17:51] Right.
[00:17:52] So you got to make that commitment.
[00:17:53] Right.
[00:17:53] So it's just something to think about.
[00:17:56] Then after that, obviously distribution, which you said you're a little concerned on the download.
[00:18:01] So you have audio and you have video, correct?
[00:18:04] Yes.
[00:18:04] Yeah.
[00:18:05] So audio, where are you distributing it?
[00:18:07] Like what platform?
[00:18:09] So I use Buzzsprout.
[00:18:11] Okay.
[00:18:11] It's my main platform to just kind of disseminate it to almost all podcast streaming platforms.
[00:18:18] So are you, are you on all the platforms, right?
[00:18:20] Yeah.
[00:18:21] Basically everything I think except Amazon something.
[00:18:24] Yeah.
[00:18:25] I would look into TuneIn, which is the Amazon one.
[00:18:29] Okay.
[00:18:29] Yes.
[00:18:29] That's good.
[00:18:30] Yeah.
[00:18:31] Are you on that or not?
[00:18:32] No.
[00:18:33] So I'm not, I think that's one of the only ones I'm not on.
[00:18:36] Yeah.
[00:18:36] Yeah.
[00:18:37] I will go into the Buzzsprout page where it says all the directories and like get into
[00:18:41] all of them if you can, especially TuneIn for some reason.
[00:18:46] We got a massive downloads from like a spike recently because they integrate that application
[00:18:54] with some players in cars.
[00:18:56] So it auto plays a bunch of podcasts.
[00:18:59] So it helps you be discovered.
[00:19:01] So I will put that in there.
[00:19:03] Like that's something that has told us be like, we can't do that.
[00:19:06] Cause I was like, what is this?
[00:19:07] I have no idea where it was coming from.
[00:19:08] And they were like, yeah.
[00:19:09] And they do airplanes and they do things.
[00:19:11] So they like, they place shows depending on it.
[00:19:14] Again, I don't know what the algorithm does or works or how it does it, but I'm like,
[00:19:18] it comes from there.
[00:19:19] So put it on there.
[00:19:20] Obviously if you can.
[00:19:24] Is your main traffic, like is your podcast mainly audio or mainly video?
[00:19:29] Like, where do you see the most traction?
[00:19:32] Um, so I think I usually see the most traction whenever I have a guest.
[00:19:36] So I guess that would be video, but it's a bit of a mix.
[00:19:39] I think it mainly depends on the topic because some people tend to be less, I get less like
[00:19:46] lower downloads if it's more of a serious topic.
[00:19:48] And then I get more downloads if it's more of a topic that I guess people can immediately relate to.
[00:19:53] Uh, since it's a bit of a mix, but it's, I would say that there are more audio than video episodes in total.
[00:20:03] Yeah.
[00:20:03] More audio episode published or more.
[00:20:06] Yeah.
[00:20:07] Yeah.
[00:20:08] So, so sorry.
[00:20:09] So bigger in audio form or on video form, like where do you get the most down?
[00:20:14] Right.
[00:20:14] Yeah.
[00:20:15] So in audio form for sure.
[00:20:18] In audio form.
[00:20:19] Okay.
[00:20:20] Perfect.
[00:20:22] Um, so there's a couple of levers here, right?
[00:20:28] It's obviously YouTube alone can be its own topic.
[00:20:32] So we're going to like put it a little bit, like it would apply to that, but you can go through like the thumbnail rabbit hole.
[00:20:39] You can go through the, you know, headline rabbit hole and then your SEO work rabbit hole.
[00:20:45] So I'll leave Mr. Beast videos to do that.
[00:20:48] Yeah.
[00:20:48] There's a amazing creators, um, that are like pod video podcast first.
[00:20:54] Uh, they're called Colin and Samir.
[00:20:56] Uh, I will watch some of their interviews and, uh, John Jushua as well as super cool.
[00:21:03] Uh, so here I'll get, I'll share the channels with you.
[00:21:05] Um, but they talk a lot about video podcast specific stuff, which, um, are you ready to see your brain?
[00:21:16] Yeah.
[00:21:16] I'll put them in the chat again.
[00:21:18] This is Colin and Samir.
[00:21:19] And then John.
[00:21:22] You sure can never spell his, his right.
[00:21:27] Uh, but John is part of our network too.
[00:21:29] And he's awesome.
[00:21:31] He does very, very cool, cool things.
[00:21:34] So he goes and he interviews creators and then they talk about these elements that help.
[00:21:37] So on YouTube, if you enjoy consuming content, I recommend those guys.
[00:21:42] But basically, um, long story short is like, okay, what will be a title that can attract?
[00:21:49] So like, are you leaning towards being polarizing, not being polarizing?
[00:21:52] Right.
[00:21:52] So that's the fun part of most people are like, I want to stay in the middle.
[00:21:56] So polarizing, you don't have to create and steer the pot, but you're like, okay, my opinion is this one.
[00:22:01] Right.
[00:22:02] And then you talk about why that's your opinion.
[00:22:04] So, you know, I'm a dad, so I'm not my Hispanic dad.
[00:22:08] Most people here in America love gentle parenting.
[00:22:10] I don't know if you saw online recently, but they're like, there's like this girl at Walmart, like destroying things.
[00:22:15] Like it's this clip that went viral, the Walmart girl, you saw it.
[00:22:18] Right.
[00:22:19] I'm like, dude, I will kill my kid.
[00:22:21] That's crazy.
[00:22:22] I will literally drag him by the feet.
[00:22:24] I know I'm kidding, by the way, but I'm like, I will be a little more stern.
[00:22:28] Like the first second that he's like, like I'm walking out of the store.
[00:22:31] Like this is unacceptable.
[00:22:32] Right.
[00:22:33] Like this is not happening.
[00:22:34] So my position is that, so maybe my content is about that position.
[00:22:38] Right.
[00:22:38] And I'm like, well, maybe a parent will react to this.
[00:22:41] So maybe it's okay to be in the middle.
[00:22:43] No, no, no.
[00:22:43] My opinion is this one.
[00:22:45] Right.
[00:22:45] So that will attract those people that resonate with that message and it will repel the people that don't.
[00:22:52] Right.
[00:22:52] Which is fine.
[00:22:53] Right.
[00:22:53] Most people, sometimes that we're scared of like, if I say this thing, I'm going to lose everybody.
[00:22:57] That's okay.
[00:22:57] You will lose the people that are not attracted to that message.
[00:23:00] But then it will attract the people that actually resonate with me.
[00:23:04] And that's a beautiful part about YouTube because with the clips, they help you discover that.
[00:23:08] So the more like you're leaning towards your opinion.
[00:23:11] Uh, and it's okay.
[00:23:12] At some point, like if you decide that you're wrong in that opinion, maybe do an episode.
[00:23:15] I'm like, I was wrong on that thing.
[00:23:17] Right.
[00:23:17] And it's okay.
[00:23:18] We can always retract.
[00:23:20] So I will, I will, um, recommend, you know, leaning towards that thing on the audio platforms.
[00:23:26] There's a couple elements that I would like you to start looking at, which is, um, you can look at these in your, uh, creators for Spotify app.
[00:23:36] I don't know if you have it, but.
[00:23:38] Yeah, you know.
[00:23:39] And then you can also look at it on the backend of the Apple.
[00:23:43] So podcast, uh, Apple podcast platform on the backend.
[00:23:46] Mm-hmm.
[00:23:47] And what the two things that you want to look at are your seven day downloads, which indicate, okay.
[00:23:54] Is people attracted to my headlines?
[00:23:58] So if you're like, okay, let's say you have an average of, I don't know, a thousand downloads per month.
[00:24:04] Right.
[00:24:05] Or per episode, let's say per episode.
[00:24:07] And then all of a sudden you publish one and it's like, okay, the first seven days I had a 2000.
[00:24:13] What happened?
[00:24:14] Like, like, did we promote it on a different channel?
[00:24:17] Did we promote it?
[00:24:18] Like, did we send a thousand episodes, a thousand people more, right?
[00:24:22] Like what happened?
[00:24:23] What's the outlier?
[00:24:24] And then you can test that out.
[00:24:26] So the more you can get on those seven downloads, that indicates that people are discovering your show and they're downloading it immediately.
[00:24:32] Right.
[00:24:32] Maybe you started sending an email to your email list.
[00:24:35] If you have an email list with the episode and that helped promote.
[00:24:39] So that's the immediate download seven days.
[00:24:41] Then you're going to look at your 30 days.
[00:24:43] Um, the 30 days means, um, basically are people downloading my long tail episodes.
[00:24:52] Right.
[00:24:52] So the launch, the first seven days is people that are like subscribers following your show and different things.
[00:24:58] And if you try a different marketing campaign, as you, maybe you launch a website and the website has a link to your show, for example, or maybe you guessed on a different show.
[00:25:06] Uh, you promoted it.
[00:25:08] Then that's the 30 days is going to tell you that.
[00:25:11] Right.
[00:25:12] And then you guys are looking at consumption rates.
[00:25:14] So Apple does this really well.
[00:25:15] It will tell you people consume like 60% of your episode or 20% of your episode.
[00:25:20] So you're going to start looking at like, okay, what's my average, what's the outliers of like, what are the episodes that people download the most?
[00:25:26] Right.
[00:25:26] Or listen the most.
[00:25:28] I want people listening to the entire show versus the ones that are like, maybe people completed 10%.
[00:25:33] Right.
[00:25:34] So you want to do more of what people are consuming.
[00:25:37] So that's feedback.
[00:25:38] Right.
[00:25:38] So in our specific case, when we first started with like solo episodes, I don't know how long have you been listening to the show, but we did one at an event where our commitment was three a week.
[00:25:47] And we jumped in a car and we're like, crap, we haven't recorded today.
[00:25:51] And we basically grabbed the iPhone and we recorded our thoughts on that event.
[00:25:56] And the episode lasted about 15 minutes.
[00:25:58] It was the first one that we did about 15, 15 minutes.
[00:26:01] Everybody downloaded it.
[00:26:03] Everybody listened to the whole thing.
[00:26:04] And we're like, we should be doing solo episodes and we should be doing shorter solo episodes.
[00:26:10] So we started testing it out and it worked out.
[00:26:13] And now solo episodes resonate a lot.
[00:26:15] So start looking for those indicators.
[00:26:17] Then on distribution, it's like, okay, same thing about your topics.
[00:26:21] Look at like, where are your people hanging out online?
[00:26:26] Is there Reddit threads that are going?
[00:26:28] Are they Facebook groups?
[00:26:30] Are they communities that they're hanging out?
[00:26:32] Are they masterminds that they're doing?
[00:26:36] Are they physical events, physical meetups that you can show up and do this?
[00:26:41] And every event is an opportunity for you to support the group by maybe providing the episode.
[00:26:48] So let's say, let's use a Facebook group spikes, for example, right?
[00:26:52] You find a Facebook group that people are talking about these topics.
[00:26:56] And you find, you search, let's say you're talking climate change, right?
[00:27:00] And you search climate change.
[00:27:02] And there's going to be a few people that are going to be commenting on those things.
[00:27:06] Reddit threads, same thing.
[00:27:07] Like, ask me anything.
[00:27:08] Things like that.
[00:27:09] And then you're going to see maybe five people respond to their comments.
[00:27:12] Maybe they're asking a question, you know, give your opinion on it.
[00:27:15] And like, hey, by the way, Alex and Filippo, who owns a platform called Podmatch, which I highly recommend.
[00:27:20] He does this every single episode.
[00:27:23] He goes in there and he's part of his routine.
[00:27:25] He's the CEO of this company.
[00:27:26] He does it every single day.
[00:27:28] And he answered questions.
[00:27:29] He's like, hey, by the way, this is my opinion on this.
[00:27:31] And I have an episode about that topic.
[00:27:34] You know, if you're interested here, here it is.
[00:27:36] And you send them that specific episode.
[00:27:39] And if that person can log in and say, but every single person that goes and reads those comments, then they're going to be like, oh, maybe that's interesting.
[00:27:47] And then those links are going to start to leave online.
[00:27:49] And it's going to help you get traffic.
[00:27:51] So Alex's goal is to actually get one new listener a day.
[00:27:55] So that's why he does.
[00:27:56] That's the goal.
[00:27:57] And eventually, like he compounds, right?
[00:27:59] So that's a very like grassroots organic tactic that you can do.
[00:28:03] We run ads to show.
[00:28:05] I don't know if you have a budget to run ads, but I probably don't recommend it immediately.
[00:28:09] You can get a spike in the seven day downloads.
[00:28:12] Our personal retention was about 3%.
[00:28:15] So we just like growing organically.
[00:28:17] Another thing is maybe find newsletters that talk about your topic.
[00:28:23] If you subscribe to newsletters and email lists and things like that.
[00:28:27] Be like, what are some people that are sending emails about these topics?
[00:28:31] Right.
[00:28:31] And then reach out to them and be like, hey, I have these episodes.
[00:28:34] It resonates a lot with it.
[00:28:35] I would love to have a way to collaborate with you.
[00:28:38] And and then if you place the podcast on those newsletters, because newsletter readers tend to listen to podcast.
[00:28:45] It's a good traffic source.
[00:28:47] And now remember this podcast listeners listens to podcasts.
[00:28:51] So if you go and, you know, promote your show on other shows.
[00:28:55] Right.
[00:28:55] You can do that.
[00:28:57] Pod match.
[00:28:58] I'll send you the link because I think this is one that you must be on.
[00:29:02] It's six bucks a month, but you can connect with other podcasters and you can guest on other shows.
[00:29:08] So if you guess on other shows, their listeners are going to resonate with you and they're going to transfer that listener podcast listens, listen to podcast.
[00:29:15] So those are like the main drivers that for like a podcast listenership that you can you can try out.
[00:29:24] And then obviously we talked.
[00:29:27] Let me see.
[00:29:28] I'm sure I have some some buffers, so I'll continue because I promise we talked about my decision.
[00:29:32] We haven't got it, but I needed to get those out of the way because like that's like the base to this.
[00:29:37] All right. Monetization.
[00:29:39] When you say monetization, what do you what do you want?
[00:29:42] Like what do you picture? Is it like a sponsorship?
[00:29:45] Is it what is it?
[00:29:47] So I'm always interested in like diversifying monetization.
[00:29:51] So I'm interested in sponsorships.
[00:29:53] I'm also interested in like maybe possible collaborations, maybe affiliate marketing, maybe ads, you know, stuff like that.
[00:30:00] Or if it's if it's like communities on Patreon or something like that.
[00:30:04] I'm kind of open to all of them because I'm new.
[00:30:07] I don't know which ones obviously will work best for me.
[00:30:10] So I'm kind of willing to try it all.
[00:30:15] So, okay.
[00:30:17] Monetization is also one of those rabbit holes.
[00:30:20] The faster, the fastest way that we've seen podcasts being monetized almost with no audience is by selling something.
[00:30:30] And it's not by selling something to the audience is by collaborating with the people that you bring into your show.
[00:30:36] So I'll give you an example.
[00:30:38] Like we sell our services like that.
[00:30:40] We've mentioned it on the show many times.
[00:30:41] Like we bring people on the show.
[00:30:43] We find a way to collaborate with them.
[00:30:45] That person has an introduction to what we do, which is a service.
[00:30:49] Yeah.
[00:30:49] So in your specific case, what is that something that you offer?
[00:30:52] Right.
[00:30:53] So is I know you don't have to answer me right now, but like, could you sell something?
[00:30:59] Could you have a resource that you can share with people?
[00:31:03] So I'll give you an example.
[00:31:04] We had somebody jump on and they wrote children's books.
[00:31:08] And they were trying to sell individual books, right?
[00:31:12] Through a funnel.
[00:31:13] So we're like, okay, maybe you have a podcast.
[00:31:16] You're passionate about your podcast.
[00:31:17] You bring guests on the shows.
[00:31:18] Why don't you bring and start collaborating with like head of libraries or head of schools or head of daycares?
[00:31:24] Cause you're, you have a kid's book.
[00:31:26] And after that conversation about the, the, the parenting that you, that you talk about, you can ask them be like, Hey, Louise, I would love to collaborate with you.
[00:31:36] Is there a way that we can place a thousand books in your library?
[00:31:38] Right.
[00:31:39] Is there a way that we can, that you have, do you have an email list that we can, you know, promote the book and sell it there?
[00:31:45] Those kinds of things.
[00:31:46] So with your specific topics, again, I don't, I don't know what you could offer on the backend.
[00:31:51] That's, you know, you can play around.
[00:31:53] It could be workshops.
[00:31:54] It could be events.
[00:31:55] It could be these different things.
[00:31:57] And they'll probably be the fastest way that you can do it.
[00:31:59] The higher the ticket, obviously, you know, the better, I don't know how familiar you're with like, or how comfortable you are selling stuff, but that could be it.
[00:32:06] Right. Maybe you have a resource and it starts that way and you start collecting emails and then you start asking your community, Hey, what do you guys want?
[00:32:14] Right.
[00:32:15] A good channel is, I mean, all these channels and examples have been doing it for years, but yes, there is a good example, right?
[00:32:22] They started with a community.
[00:32:23] I don't know. Are you familiar with just theory?
[00:32:26] No, not yet. No.
[00:32:27] So there are, there are YouTube channel.
[00:32:30] Super awesome.
[00:32:31] And they started doing just random channels, sorry, random challenges online.
[00:32:38] They'll be like, I'm going to go on the street and I'm fine.
[00:32:40] Five people to say yes to me doing this thing.
[00:32:43] Right.
[00:32:43] But they're like very, they're not like TikTok toxic.
[00:32:48] They're like, they're very wholesome.
[00:32:49] Right.
[00:32:50] And, uh, they, they grew because it started collecting emails on their shop.
[00:32:55] They started, you know, having that.
[00:32:57] And then they asked the people like, what else do you want?
[00:32:59] And the people told them.
[00:33:01] Um, so be like, okay, what's a based on your topics.
[00:33:05] What's a cool resource that you can share with people on your email list.
[00:33:08] So it could be, okay, here are the top 10.
[00:33:12] Episodes, you know, and you create that list and you host it in your little site.
[00:33:17] Right.
[00:33:18] It could be like a high level site, click funnels, or it could be a Google doc with links with, like you saw a resource is a Google doc.
[00:33:24] Yeah.
[00:33:24] People are done.
[00:33:25] It's very simple.
[00:33:26] Here are the top 10 episodes or like, here are the top questions that you know, my guests ask, or here are the top, top 10 questions about these topics.
[00:33:35] And here are the answers to them.
[00:33:36] Like what's a very cool resource that you can give in exchange to your listener.
[00:33:40] Right.
[00:33:40] Okay.
[00:33:40] And you can start building that email list and collaborating and sending people to that email list.
[00:33:45] And then from that email list, let's say you have a hundred people on that email list.
[00:33:48] You start communicating with them.
[00:33:50] Like they're your friend.
[00:33:51] They're like, Hey Louise, I know that you're, you know, welcome to my email list.
[00:33:55] I want to know, I want to get to know you a little bit better.
[00:33:57] We talk about these topics and we're thinking about these solutions.
[00:34:00] What do you think?
[00:34:01] And then they're going to start responding you back and then you can build a product that's for them.
[00:34:04] So I will recommend those two start looking into maybe solutions like that.
[00:34:10] A newsletter is another option that you, that you could, that you could do that requires all these requires emails and a little bit of a database type thing.
[00:34:19] As far as sponsorships, we have Justin here has a lot of big sponsorship deals, even if you're just starting out.
[00:34:31] So I'll send you the link to this episode.
[00:34:33] Um, it's a 456.
[00:34:35] I don't know if you've listened to it, but he just released a book.
[00:34:39] Um, Justin Moore.
[00:34:42] Okay.
[00:34:43] Um, about getting sponsorships for small things.
[00:34:47] And these are like big, bigger sponsorships.
[00:34:49] Do not go by the, it's called CPM model, uh, cost per thousand.
[00:34:55] Cause they're going to pay you like a 25 bucks per thousand dollars.
[00:34:59] That's nothing.
[00:34:59] So this guy, he teaches basically how to pitch a sponsorship to these brands that could be aware.
[00:35:06] So highly, highly, highly recommend him.
[00:35:09] He's awesome.
[00:35:10] Um, he just launched his book.
[00:35:13] Like I said, uh, at the bottom of that page, you'll see his social media.
[00:35:16] And I think that the links should be there.
[00:35:18] It's called the sponsor magnet.
[00:35:20] So if you're looking into sponsorships, I will maybe look at that resource.
[00:35:25] Number one, he's brought in more than $4 million in sponsorships, uh, for him and his wife.
[00:35:31] So I, it's, we connected with him.
[00:35:34] I saw very awesome.
[00:35:34] So those are a couple of ways.
[00:35:36] I'm a big fan of selling our own thing.
[00:35:37] Cause that's what we do.
[00:35:38] Yeah.
[00:35:39] Um, but email list number one, every single person is going to tell you, start building
[00:35:43] that email list.
[00:35:44] So what's a resource that you can share with, with them.
[00:35:47] And, uh, your first guest is your first, is your first audience member.
[00:35:51] So whenever that guest comes, uh, we have three questions that we like to ask at the end of
[00:35:56] every episode behind cameras.
[00:35:57] We're like, Hey, thank you so much for coming to the show.
[00:36:00] It was a great experience.
[00:36:01] Is there something that we can help you with?
[00:36:03] So always lead with value, right?
[00:36:05] They're going to tell you, yes, no, no worries.
[00:36:07] Oh man.
[00:36:07] You know, you can help me with introducing me to this.
[00:36:09] Okay.
[00:36:09] Perfect.
[00:36:10] Um, by the way, I don't know if this is for you, but we do X obviously in your case,
[00:36:16] I don't know if this is for you, but I have this resource.
[00:36:18] Will you be interested?
[00:36:20] And then you can send them the link where they can sign up and download it, or you can
[00:36:24] sign them up on your computer right there and be like, Oh, perfect.
[00:36:26] I'm sending it to you right now.
[00:36:27] And then you call like that lead.
[00:36:29] And then it's like, Hey, is there other people that maybe they're interested in talking about
[00:36:33] these topics or they're interested in these resources?
[00:36:36] Um, and you can describe your dream person to connect with, and they're going to give
[00:36:40] you two or three names.
[00:36:42] And then be like, Hey, Louise, you know, uh, Justin sent me, uh, from, I just had him
[00:36:47] on my show.
[00:36:48] Here's my, the link to my show.
[00:36:49] So every opportunity, just put that link in there.
[00:36:51] And, uh, um, it will, you'll be surprised on like how that momentum goes as far as that
[00:36:57] did downloads.
[00:36:58] I know that you had that question as we wrap up is sometimes the platforms make a small
[00:37:02] change and we don't know exactly what it is.
[00:37:05] And we see a dip.
[00:37:06] We saw it at the beginning of last year, uh, with our audio or it was like, are we actually,
[00:37:12] are people actually listening to our show?
[00:37:14] And then it was like a setting that they changed on Apple and it completely like you went back
[00:37:19] up.
[00:37:19] So we don't know.
[00:37:20] So that's why I would explore what we talked about the seven day 30 downloads and look at
[00:37:25] trends of like what's happening.
[00:37:26] Be like to maybe spot it's like, what did I do this day differently to cause that?
[00:37:32] Right.
[00:37:33] Uh, in our specific case, when we are not high energy in our episodes, we see that people
[00:37:39] don't listen as much.
[00:37:41] So we're like, let's get this big high energy.
[00:37:43] Yeah.
[00:37:44] Uh, but anyways, I know it was a lot of information for like very small amount of time, but I
[00:37:49] hope, I hope it helped a little bit.
[00:37:51] Oh my gosh.
[00:37:52] No, it helps so much.
[00:37:53] I was like making all these notes while you were talking.
[00:37:56] So it's like, yeah, it's no immensely valuable and I really, really appreciate it.
[00:37:59] So thanks so much, Luis.
[00:38:01] Awesome.
[00:38:01] I put the links in the chat, the pod match.
[00:38:04] I will, I will start guessing as soon as possible, put a goal to go on other shows,
[00:38:10] at least like once a week minimum where you have your show.
[00:38:15] Cause that is the fastest way.
[00:38:17] The second other podcast listeners listen to our podcast, our podcast grows.
[00:38:22] It clips.
[00:38:24] Yeah.
[00:38:24] They help, uh, create awareness.
[00:38:26] Like YouTube has been growing.
[00:38:28] You know, we have a very small YouTube podcast.
[00:38:30] Our main platform is audio, but a YouTube content consumer is a very different consumer than
[00:38:38] a podcast listener.
[00:38:39] So people don't, don't understand that most of the time.
[00:38:42] I think you do, but have them in both.
[00:38:45] It's fine.
[00:38:46] Like your YouTube will, will grab consistency on its own.
[00:38:49] Uh, but for audios is a better audience too.
[00:38:53] It's like, there are people that take action.
[00:38:55] There are people that probably that you want to connect, you know, for future projects in
[00:38:58] your life.
[00:38:59] I don't know where you are at that point, but you probably want to the people that listen
[00:39:04] better than like the YouTube short.
[00:39:05] Yeah.
[00:39:07] Yeah.
[00:39:10] Awesome.
[00:39:10] Awesome.
[00:39:11] Um, I know.
[00:39:12] Okay.
[00:39:13] Do you have any questions?
[00:39:14] I genuinely don't even think I have any questions.
[00:39:17] If I do, maybe I'll shoot you a message, but like, I don't think I have anything at
[00:39:21] the moment.
[00:39:22] Cause there's just obviously a lot to like go through.
[00:39:25] So I really, really appreciate it.
[00:39:26] Thanks so much.
[00:39:27] Yeah, no problem.
[00:39:28] Yeah.
[00:39:28] Send us a message.
[00:39:29] Um, my last question to you is sometimes we publish this as an episode.
[00:39:33] Would you mind if we publish this one as an episode?
[00:39:36] Not at all.
[00:39:37] No, I'd be honored.
[00:39:38] That'd be so cool.
[00:39:39] Awesome.
[00:39:40] Okay.
[00:39:40] Well, it's your opportunity to plug your show.
[00:39:42] Naomi.
[00:39:43] Yeah.
[00:39:44] How do we find you?
[00:39:45] This is awesome.
[00:39:47] To the notes and quotes podcasts.
[00:39:50] We're on pretty much all podcast streaming platforms.
[00:39:53] If you want to catch us on any of the socials were on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and YouTube.

[00:40:02] Absolutely.
[00:40:03] Well, thanks for being a super good sport.

[00:40:13] Thank you.
[00:40:13] Bye.
[00:40:14] All right.
[00:40:15] Welcome back.

[00:40:50] And I'm like, yes, I promise.
[00:40:52] This is me.
[00:40:53] And, uh, we're here to help.
